El viernes 15 de junio, la botánica canadiense Hellen Kennedy estuvo en el Tecnológico de Antioquia realizando una charla sobre la familia Marantácea, un grupo de plantas de gran importancia científica en el trópico. La experta mundial en este tipo de flora estará en Medellín durante quince días para revisar las colecciones de herbarios y estudiar las marantáceas del departamento.
“Junto con la doctora Hellen, vamos a escribir un proyecto relacionado con las marantáceas y a vincular a los estudiantes de la Facultad de Ingeniería del TdeA para iniciar la revisión de los herbarios que la región tiene en espacios como la UdeA, la Universidad Nacional y el Jardín Botánico de Medellín. Vamos a revisar las colecciones, haciendo énfasis en las botánicas que no tienen nombre científico porque no han podido ser identificadas ni descritas”, señaló Marcela Serna González, una de las más destacadas botánicas latinoamericanas y docente de la Facultad de Ingeniería del Tecnológico de Antioquia.
La estadía, Helen Kennedy contará con el apoyo de la profesora Serna González en la recolección de muestras botánicas para acopiar material y describir, así, nuevas especies de la mano de expertos en esta materia.

The Marantáceas of Antioquia in the Magnifying Glass of Hellen Kennedy
On Friday, June 15, the Canadian botanist Hellen Kennedy visited Tecnológico de Antioquia, giving a lecture about the Marantácea family, a group of plants of great scientific importance in the tropics. The world expert in this type of flora will be in Medellin for fifteen days to review the collections of herbaria and study the marantáceas of the region.
"Together with Dr. Hellen, we are going to write a project related to the marantáceas and to link the students of the School of Engineering of the TdeA to initiate the revision of the herbariums that the region has in spaces such as the UdeA, the National University and the Botanical Garden of Medellín. We are going to review the collections, emphasizing botanicals that have no scientific name because they have not been identified or described," said Marcela Serna González, one of the most prominent Latin American botanists and a professor at the School of Engineering of the Tecnológico de Antioquia.
During the trip Helen Kennedy will have the support of Professor Serna González in the collection of botanical samples, materials and describe, thus, new species by the hand of experts in this field.
